innovative Growth & Transformation Leadership

Summary

Doug Shears
I develop transformative opportunities by listening to customers, building from organization strengths, and employing emerging technologies to transition from product-focused delivery to solutions-focused growth.
Growing up n Toledo, Ohio, I was curious, creative, and loved to build things: developing a life-long love of Legos, building a sidecar for my my bike, and constructing a downhill ski bike from a discarded frame. In high school, I excelled at math and science but had a more natural talent for the social sciences and humanities. When it came time, Yale University seemed to be a great fit, allowing me to continue my interest in engineering in the context of a broader liberal arts education.

At Yale, I discovered my love of rugby, playing four years for the Yale RFC and continuing with the Milwaukee RFC for an additional 10+ years. I remain fascinated by the sport’s free-flowing, non-stop nature and the patterns of play that develop over the course of an 80 minute game. Each player is required to express athleticism, determination and grit in the context of a team that requires coordination but not strict adherence to positional roles and a strategy, just like jazz musicians and business leaders.

I believe innovation and growth initiatives should emanate from the culture and core competencies of the organization. Be authentic. Build from strength into adjacent markets, new applications, or re-imagined solutions. As our cultures and economies continue to evolve, there will be an increasing need for companies to move away from product-focused delivery to a more wholistic and sustainable solutions-focused relationship with customers and stakeholders. Broad partnerships with supply chain, technology partners and, in some cases, competitors will be needed to build seamless, friction-free solutions that advance customer interests. Business success depends on customers successfully meeting their explicit (and implicit) goals.

A naturally curious and empathetic listener, I enjoy the opportunity to hear about a customer’s or colleague’s challenges and pull from my experience or network of subject matter experts to devise solutions from seemingly disparate fields. When a solution is not apparent, I construct hypotheses and small experiments to explore the stated issue and identify the relevant solution space. I have found Lean Startup methodology and the associated business model discovery tools combined with LEAN product development to b valuable in building complete solutions that account for technology and business needs. These tools also allow effective consideration of priorities and development of product and technology roadmaps.

Timeline

  1. BRIDGE Deployed - Mower-Use Tracking MVP

Led technical solution team to deploy 150 pc MVP deployment of a universal lawn mower activity tracker that would transmit data to an mobile app and cloud interface.  Great cross-functional team with marketing and product managment.

  2. Autonomous Robot Mower Demo - Virtual Boundary

Demonstrated self-navigating engine powered grass cutting robot utilizing ultra-wide band radio frequencies for localization.

  3. Project Anchiale - 21kW mCHP Units Commissioned

Two Gen3 prototypes commercially installed for DOE study.  Units perfomed at >85% effciency for 19 hours/day continuously unattended for 6 months.  Potential to provide <3 yr payback on energy savings.

  4. InfoHub Commercial Turf introduced at GIE Expo

InfoHubCT - First-to-market asset and productivity tracker for lawn and garden professionals.  Competitors followed.

  5. Sr Project Engineer, Vehicle Powertrain Developmen, Briggs & Stratton Corp.

Developed powertrain and fuel injection systems for on-highway and off-highway vehicles. Worked directly with vehicle customers in the United States, Europe, and India to develop custom solutions. Specified and commissioned a purpose-built vehicle development lab.

  6. Project Engineer, Mechanical Components

Developed the fuel system for the first mass-produced exhaust emission compliant lawn mower engine. Supervised laboratory technicians to develop fuel systems and engine speed governors. Performed international supplier assessments for light vehicle fuel systems.

  7. Project Engineer, R&D

Investigated the application of electronic controls to small engines for exhaust emission control and improved performance.

  8. Staff Engineer, Evaporative Emissions

Responsible for technical response to new outdoor power equipment industry evaporative emissions regulation. Served as technical lead for regulatory negotiations with EPA and CARB. Led team pioneering new testing methods constructed $1M laboratory, and developed benchmark designs for 35 product families.

  9. Manager, Global Technology & Innovation

Developed and evaluated new product concepts for residential outdoor power equipment. Managed Shanghai based Chinese-national R&D sourcing engineer.

  10. Director of Strategic Development

Developed and led multiple portfolios of concurrent growth-strategy projects in the fields of Internet of Things (IoT), autonomous outdoor robotics, and distributed power generation. Pioneered the use of Lean Startup techniques in the enterprise from idea to product.

  11. B.S,,Mechanical Engineering, Yale University

Project work consisted of an instrumented golf club head for swing analysis, an electronically controlled carburetor for small engines, and a human-powered hydrofoil craft.

  12. M.S., Engineering, Milwaukee School of Engineering

Course concentration in electrical engineering.  Captstone project was a computer simulation for engine load and emissions estimation for a CVT transmission small car powered by a 19 kW air-cooled engine.
